What can I do to help avoid a Christmas burglary?

With Christmas time fast approaching, we all need to double check our level of security, particularly in view of the additional value of property in the home with Christmas presents.

According to industry sources, the average loss last year was €3,000 from house break-ins. Cash, jewellery and electronic items remain the most popular with thieves. Try to record all serial numbers of electronic items and mark property with your seven digit Eircode using an UV pen.

Are your doors and windows secure? Is your home well lit outside? Use light timers inside. Remember an unlit house means an unoccupied house. Burglars will always target the dark house.

Are you going away at Christmas? Don’t post any information on social media that would advertise your absence. Increasingly we are hearing of cyber risks to the home, is your WiFi password protected? If not, your email and banking information could be at risk.

Remember in these dark evenings to light up, lock up and follow the best Garda advice by fitting an approved monitored alarm system. Monitoring costs less than €0.50 per day. This means that should your alarm activate, the monitoring station will ensure that it will be attended to, even by the Gardaí if necessary.
