How can I better secure my home for Winter?
As the long, dark evenings arrive, prevent your property being burgled with these tips:
Lighting: As Garda statistics confirm the peak period for house burglaries is between 5pm and 11pm, you should consider lighting up your property. Automatic dusk to dawn lights, as well as movement sensor activated lights are a great deterrent. Modern LED lighting is very cheap to run nowadays. Criminals will always avoid well lit homes and move onto unlit ones.
Property Marking: Every Irish home now has an individual 7 digit Eircode. All valuable items should be engraved with your Eircode, or marked with a UV pen. This will make your property unattractive to any criminal and will assist the Gardaí in returning stolen property recovered to its rightful owner.
Door Chain: Fit a door chain to your front door. This will allow you speak to and view any visitor before considering admitting them to your home.
Text Alert: Join your local text alert scheme where you will receive regular Garda messages about suspicious vehicles in your area.
Doors & Windows: Ensure all your doors and windows are secure, especially at the rear of your house as over 50% of intrusions occur through a rear door or window which is insecure.
Alarm System: Have your alarm system serviced, to ensure it is in working order. Better again, have it monitored in line with best Garda advice. Monitoring typically costs €0.50c per day.
